The ballast hopper is a type of open-top freight hopper wagon. Its main function is to lay ballast when building new railways or overhauling current railways. It can also be used as a general wagon to transport bulk materials.

K13NK Ballast Hopper Wagon Details
The K13NK type ballast hopper wagon is the final modified model of the original Chinese K13 ballast hopper, which is firstly produced in 1972.
The K13NK ballast hopper car is designed by CRRC Taiyuan on the basis of the original K13 type. It adopts some improved designs such as using K2 Bogies to replace old bogies, adding the automatic vehicle adjustment device of empty and load, and adopting combined brake beam and high friction composite brake shoe.

- Unloading mode: both sides and the middle can be unloaded separately or at the same time;
- Unloading power: mainly pneumatic, supplemented by manual;
- Bogie: K2 type bogies;
- Coupler: Grade C steel No.13 under action;
- Coupler yoke: Grade C steel 13A type;
- Buffer: ST type;
KZ70 Ballast Hopper Details
In order to meet the equipment demand of the rapid development of heavy haul railway transportation in China at that time, the CRRC Taiyuan designed the KZ70 ballast hopper car in 2005.
Compared with the K13NK hopper, many performances of KZ70, including bearing capacity and wagon body strength, are greatly improved.
Features:
- The main bearing parts of the KZ70 ballast hopper wagon body are made of high-strength weathering steel with a yield strength of 450MPa and special cold-formed steel, which effectively reduces the dead weight of the vehicle and improves the net load of the vehicle.
- The steel structure of the hopper wagon body is optimized to increase the strength reserve; Hyperboloid U-shaped cold-formed steel is used to build the body side column to improve the rigidity, strength, and reliability of the sidewall.
- The reliability of the coupler buffer device is improved by using an E-grade steel 17 type high-strength coupler and MT-2 type large-capacity buffer.
- The application of K5 or K6 bogies ensures the driving speed when fully loaded could reach 120 km/h. The action force between the wheels and rails is also effectively reduced to relieve rail and wheel wear.
KZ80 Ballast Hopper Details
The KZ80 ballast hopper wagon was successfully designed in 2012 together with the KM80 coal hopper by CRRC Taiyuan. This type of ballast wagon has a large loading capacity of 80 metric tons and can unload rapidly automatically.
The KZ80 ballast hopper meets the comprehensive technical requirements of the new railway freight wagon with a large axle load in China. Its loading capacity reaches 80t, which is 14.3% higher than that of the KZ70 type hopper wagon, significantly improved the train transportation capacity.
Features:
- The load of the train is 80 tons, and the weight per linear meter is 7.99 tons. Under the same station line length, the transportation capacity of the train is greatly improved.
- The control room of the wagon does not have a side door; rain eaves, platform, and railing are set at the end, and a protective device is added to the door lock to improve the safety and anti-theft performance of the wagon.
- The hopper wagon is equipped with 27-ton axle load low power bogies, Type 17 coupler, and HM-1 buffer, which can meet the traction requirements of ten thousand-ton trains.
- The wind control pipeline device of the wagon adopts an integrated console, which is modular installed.
